WILMINGTON, N.C. – The College of Southern Maryland volleyball program took to the court for the first time in matches that counted and had a difficult debut, coming away victorious in just one of the 13 sets played over the weekend as they were swept by Cape Fear (host), Lake-Sumter State, and St. John's River State while taking the second set versus Fayetteville Tech.

Hawks' Top Performers:

 

  • Leila Iafeta spearheaded the offense in the Port City, leading the Hawks in points (41, 3.15 p/s), kills (37, 2.85 p/s), and attacks (126) by a wide margin with 22 digs (1.69 p/s) plus a pair of blocks and services aces each.

 

  • Deanna Kalkbrenner made a spectacular first impression for Coach Sanders on both sides of the net, rejecting a team-best ten blocks (0.77 p/s) in addition to 21 kills (1.62 p/s) as well as a hitting percentage of 0.316.

 

  • Mia DeCarlo was the service specialist for the Black and Gold, watching as eight of her attempts from the line hit the floor, a 0.62 per set average.

 

  • Ana Salamanca was the captain on the defensive side of the coin, recording 60 digs (4.62 p/s) whereas the primary setter role fell to Amelie Lancioni with 74 assists (5.69 p/s) on top of making a positive mark in the digs department at 45 (3.46).

  • The ladies get a week off to reset, recharge and set their sights on a better showing on Saturday and Sunday in New Rochelle at the Monroe Invitational.
