Early Deficits Too Much To Overcome for CSM
The College of Southern Maryland Hawks dropped both games of their doubleheader against CCBC Essex on April 27. CSM lost the first game 20-14 and the second game 8-7.
Freshman Sean Mason hit his first home run of the season in the bottom of the first inning, a two-run shot that brought the score to 7-5 with the Hawks still trailing.
Sophomore Scott Logue had a big day at the plate in Game 1, going 4-5 with two doubles. He also scored two runs.
CSM pitchers struggled in Game 1. CCBC Essex put up seven runs in each of the first two innings and added on late with a four-run sixth inning. The Hawks gave up 17 hits, the second-most in a game this season.
"The first two innings were rough," CSM head coach Aaron Michael said. "We gave up 14 runs the first two innings, and we ended up scoring 14, but when you spot them 14, it's going to be hard to win that game. Not for nothing though, that team is second in our division for the playoffs so that's a really good team over there.
"I was proud of how we battled back. We didn't let up, we didn't give up, we kept coming, we kept trying. In that second game, we came up one hit short, and that's a good indication of these guys still fighting all the way to the end."
CSM headed into the bottom of the seventh inning of Game 2 down 8-4.
CSM was able to load the bases for freshman Trevor Drummond, who came through with a two-run single to right field that brought the score to 8-6.
Freshman Peyton Myers kept the rally alive with a two-out RBI single to center field to make it 8-7.
Unfortunately, the Hawks were not able to get another run across, squashing their hopes of a comeback.
CSM will finish the regular season on May 4 when they travel to Cecil College.
Although they have not technically been eliminated from the playoffs, Michael acknowledges that he and his team "have an uphill battle for sure. There's only one way to go and that's to lay it all on the line and let's see where the chips fall. We still have a puncher's chance, and as long as we have a puncher's chance, we're going to go down swinging. Hopefully things will go our way a little bit, but even if they don't, I'm fine as long as the boys are playing hard and giving me all the effort that they can."
