Hawks Drop Both Games of Doubleheader to Garrett
The College of Southern Maryland Hawks fell short in both games of their doubleheader against Garrett College on April 14. The Hawks lost the first game by a score of 6-3 and the second game 10-4.
Freshman Peyton Myers led off the bottom of the first inning of Game 1 with a solo home run to right-center field to give the Hawks an early 1-0 lead. This was his second home run of the season. He finished the game going 2-3 at the plate with one walk, one RBI, and scored two runs.
Sophomore Scott Logue drove in the Hawks' other two runs of the game in the seventh inning.
Sophomore Kenny Rickett struck out a career-high nine batters over five and one third innings pitched
Speaking on his offense, CSM head coach Aaron Michael said "We got guys on today, we just didn't find ways to get them home. When we got guys on, then we had bad at-bats. There were too many times where we had real good chances to score runs - runners on third and less than two outs, first and second and nobody out - and we're not capitalizing on those right now, and that's been a struggle for us. Garrett did that today very well and we did not."
In the second game, freshman Ryan Barnett went 3-3 at the plate with one RBI and one run scored.
Myers went 2-3 again with an RBI.
Even though the Hawks have been able to put some runs on the scoreboard in their losses, Michael says his offense might be trying to do too much at times.
"The natural tendency is to press a little bit, especially when you haven't been winning many games, and that's our situation," Michael said. "The problem is we get to a point where we're trying to make it all up with one swing and that doesn't work. These guys, to a fault they're all trying to make that happen, but when you're playing really good baseball, you're doing your small part and letting the next guy do his small part and let the next guy do his small part and it just flows. We're not doing that right now, we're definitely pressing a little bit too much."
The Hawks will play their last home games of the 2018-19 season on April 27 against CCBC Essex.
