Weekly Recap: Men’s Hoops Clinches Home Quarterfinals, Spring Sports Start

LA PLATA, Md. – The College of Southern Maryland athletics program will host a postseason game inside CSM Gymnasium on Tuesday night vs. Potomac State thanks to the men's basketball team's win at Garrett while softball and baseball both got their campaigns underway.

Men's Basketball:

  • Shamir Taylor led the Hawks in scoring at 24 per game and on defense with six total steals.
  • Amir Dade went for 15.5 points a night while making 57.9% (11-of-19) of his shots from the field and had the most assists (7).
  • Malik Acker stepped into a bigger role this week to top the team in boards (12), James Hans averaged double figures offensively (11.5 PPG), and Davion Morris was the only player with multiple blocked shots (2).

• Top Performers
  • Desiree Barnes averaged a double-double, going for 23 rebounds (11.5 p/g) and 20 points (10.0 p/g) on top of a trio of steals.
  • Amoni Taylor fronted the point production via 15.5 points a contest and was responsible for four of the Hawks' five trey balls.
  • Sanaa Morrow snagged 31 boards including 11 on the offensive glass , Cailyn Samuel swiped six steals from unsuspecting opponents, and Demi Lathern poured in 26 points and a half-dozen dimes.

  • Brooke Colliflower took home the top batting average in the season opening doubleheader with Pitt, going 4-for-7 (.571) with a pair of runs scored, a double and an RBI.
  • Both Emily Shuff and Cassie Wolfe were the run producers in the lineup for Coach Sanderson, each knocking home three teammates apiece.
  • Carrie Hayden was the baserunning expert, scoring a Hawks-high four times whereas Miranda Twigg was the only one in the circle to collect any strikeouts, fanning six Bulldogs over nine frames.

• Top Performers
  • Gabriel Rodriguez and Landon Norton both went three strong innings without giving up any earned runs, the latter not surrendering anything while the former had three unearned charged to his line.
  • Tyrese Milliard led the hit parade on Opening Day, collecting three knocks in five at-bats with a pair of ribbies and a walk.
  • Landon Norton connected once in four tries, but it was a massive swing, delivering a bases clearing double in game two.
