The College of Southern Maryland men's soccer fall 2023 season kicks off Friday, Aug. 18, when the Hawks head to Harcum College to take on the Bears in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
"As we head into the upcoming season, our team has been diligently preparing during the off-season, focusing on refining our strategies, style, system and honing our skills," CSM men's soccer co-head coach Amine El Hachimi said. "I believe we've built a cohesive and determined group that is ready to work together and face any challenges that come their way."
"One of our key strengths lies in our versatility, adaptability, and togetherness," El Hachimi said. "We have a mix of experienced returners and great, promising newcomers, allowing us to excel in various aspects of the game. Our team's dedication, work ethic, and unity will serve as the backbone of our success. Additionally, our coaching staff's strategic guidance will play a pivotal role in harnessing these strengths."
Four Hawks return from last year's squad - Austin Rye, Joe Sampson, Elijah Saleik, and Nomen Felix Mbia Sampson. Rye registered one assist in 2022, Joe Sampson also had one assist, Saleik scored one goal, and Felix Sampson recorded five goals and four assists.
"Austin, Felix, Eli, and Joe have proven themselves as valuable assets to our team," El Hachimi said. "Their experience and leadership will be instrumental in guiding our newer players. I expect them to lead by example, both on and off the field."
Regarding his newcomers, El Hachimi said, "Our group of first-year players brings a fresh energy, talent, and enthusiasm that is infectious. I'm confident that several of them will make significant contributions to the team this season. Their unique skills and determination will inject a new dynamic into our team's performance. I have high expectations for Eliass, Bailey, and Bilal and believe that their exceptional talent will significantly influence the team's performance. And I wouldn't be surprised if one of them emerges as one of the top players in the region."
The Hawks finished last season with a 5-9-1 overall record and did not reach the postseason.
"Our expectations for this season are high, and rightfully so," El Hachimi said. "We've set our sights on achieving both individual and collective growth. While winning is undoubtedly a goal, our aspirations extend beyond surpassing last year's performance. Our ambition encompasses contending for the region championship and establishing a solid team for the upcoming year, given that the majority of our team comprises freshmen."
"Our main message leading up to the start of the season is centered around unity and 'all-together,'" El Hachimi said. "We emphasize the importance of working together, supporting one another, and embracing challenges as opportunities for growth. Our collective effort, focus, and commitment to our shared goals will ultimately determine our success."
The Hawks have one team on their 2023 schedule ranked in an NJCAA preseason poll. CCBC Essex is ranked No. 2 in Division II and comes to La Plata on August 22.
"I'm particularly excited about witnessing the evolution of our team throughout the season," El Hachimi said. "The progress each player makes, and the memorable moments we create together are what truly define a successful season. I can't wait to see the passion and determination of our players culminate in a thrilling and rewarding journey."
