Hawks Soar Past Lakers in Straight Sets

The College of Southern Maryland Hawks won their second match of the season on September 12, downing the Garrett College Lakers 3-0.

The Hawks were in control from the first serve, winning their sets 25-7, 25-8, 25-6.

Sophomore Katelyn Kluh had a solid all-around game for the Hawks, tallying three service aces, three solo blocks, and tying her career-high in kills with eight.

"Katelyn, she's like our miracle child," CSM head coach Jenica Leonard said. "Last year, she came in and was very similar to her sister, kind of learning the ropes, and then this year she came out of the gates on fire. She is one of our strongest attackers we have right now. As soon as we really get the connection between the setters and her, she's going to be unstoppable."

Freshman Alyssa Gayon led the Hawks in service aces with four and digs with 14. Freshmen Mya Spaet and Kelsey Hanks were first and second on the team in assists, respectively, with 18 and 10.

This was the second win in a row for CSM, who beat Union County College 3-0 on September 7.

"For me, it gives me hope that things can get better," Leonard said. "I think it's definitely a confidence booster for the girls."
