Hawks Earn Third Straight Win

The Hawks earned their third straight victory of the season by defeating the Dragons of Howard CC in four sets (28-26, 25-20, 21-25, 25-18).

In the first set the Dragons jumped out to an 8-1 lead, led by a couple kills from Howard's Rachel Dotson. After errors by the Dragons, the Hawks would take advantage of them to claw back into the set as a kill by Katelyn Kluh cut the score to 9-8. Howard would then have five leads by four points (12-8, 14-10, 16-12, 18-14, 22-18), yet the Hawks were still hanging around. Two aces from Savannah Carroll and a kill from Katelyn Kluh would help the Hawks go on a 5-0 scoring run to take their first lead in the set at 23-22. There would be ties at 23,24,25 and after an ace by Howard's Sydney Tucker followed by a kill from Reagan Tuiasosopo, the set was tied at 26. After an error on the Dragons and an Ace from Samantha Rerig, the Hawks were able to win the first set by a score of 28-26.

In the second set the score was tied seven times (3,4,5,6,7,8,9). Two aces by Howard's Elizabeth Quinten helped the Dragons go on a 3-0 scoring run to take the lead 12-9. The Hawks would counter with a 4-0 run of their own as a kill from Zaiera Duckett gave the Hawks a 13-12 lead. After the score was tied at 13 and 14, back-to-back kills from Duckett and Tuiasosopo, followed by two aces from Tuiasosopo would help the Hawks go on a 6-1 run to take a 20-15 lead. That run would help the Hawks win the set 25-20, making the score 2-0. 

After five tie scores (2,3,4,5,6), the Dragons would go on a 3-0 run, as a kill from Mumbi Murugi-Kamau gave the Dragons a 9-6 lead in the third set. After the Hawks tied the score at 10, two kills and an ace from Tucker helped the Dragons go on a 7-1 run to take a 17-11 lead. CSM would claw back once more as an ace from Gabrielle Wilson and a kill from Savannah Carrol cut Howard's lead to three with the score 20-17. The third time would be the charm, as the Dragons went on a 5-4 run to win the set 25-21.

The Hawks were able to get out to a fast start in the fourth set as they jumped out to a 7-0 lead, with two aces from Rerig and kills from Gabrielle Wilson and Kassandra Lacayo Aguilar. After both teams would 3-0 scoring runs, the Hawks were able to retain the lead with the score 13-6. With the score in favor of CSM at 15-8, kills from Quintin and Mugugi-Kamau would help the Dragons go on a 4-1 scoring run, cutting the Hawks' lead to 16-12. The Hawks were resilient as they were able to take advantage of multiple errors from the Dragons as they would win the set on a 10-6 run to secure their third straight win of the season.

Zaiera Duckett was dominant once more with 11 kills, six digs, and an ace. Reagan Tuiasosopo was consistent as well, finishing the game with seven kills, three digs, and two aces. Katelyn Kluh and Gabrielle Wilson combined for nine kills, and Samantha Rerig along with Wilson had eight aces. Murugi-Kamau led all scorers with 17 kills and 11 digs.   

 

The Hawks will hit the road for a third straight game when they take on Delaware Technical CC on Thursday, October 11th. First serve is set for 6pm.
