Despite another hard fought effort, the Hawks fell to the Cougars of Frederick Community College in three sets (25-19, 25-17, 25-21).
In the first set it was a game of runs. The Cougars jumped out to a 6-2 lead and extended it to 12-6 before the Hawks called timeout to stop their momentum. Down 18-14, the Hawks would slowly crawl back to make the difference in score at two, 19-17 in favor of the Cougars. In a 4-0 scoring rally, Frederick took a 22-17 lead. Although a Zaiera Duckett kill would make the score 23-18, the Hawks were too little, too late to make a come-back as Frederick would take the first set, 25-19.
The Cougars would go on a 14-1 scoring run to begin the second set, a comfortable margin to have after taking the first set. The Hawks would try to crawl back as best as possible, making the score a four point deficit at 20-16, but the Cougars were able to pull away winning the second set, 25-17.
The Hawks came out on all cylinders in the third set, humping out to a 4-1 lead to start. They extended their lead to 10-6, but the Cougars never gave up. They would claw back into the game, cutting the scoring deficit to one at 12-11. The Cougars and Hawks would trade scoring runs as the game was tied at 12, 14, and 16. At that point, the Cougars went on another 4-0 scoring run to make the score 20-16. The Hawks would fight back, but they would come up short again, as the Cougars would win the match by clinching the third set with a 25-21 victory.
Zaiera Duckett led the Hawks with five kills, four serving aces, and six digs. Savannah Carrol added with three kills, two serving aces, and four digs.
The Hawks will hit the road on Sunday, September 30th when they play the Dragons of Howard CC at Montgomery College in the Raptors Invitational. First serve is set for 12pm.
