The Hawks lost their season opener at home to Montgomery College in three sets (25-10, 25-19, 25-16). Keturah Gregory, Isabel Nelligan, and Anna Chepurnova combined for 25 of Montgomery's 32 kills, as they were dominant on the front line standing at 6'2, 5'9, and 6'2 respectively. The Hawks' effort was there, but it wasn't enough to withstand the height of Montgomery. The second set of the match was the best chance for the Hawks to win a set as it was back and forth the whole time. CSM's Savanah Carrol aced a serve to cut the Montgomery deficit by two, making the score 21-19. On the next serve, the Hawks committed a few errors that were enough for Montgomery to win the second set.
The Hawks will turn around and hit the road for their first road game of the season as they take on the Cecil College Seahawks. The Seahawks are 2-1 this season, averaging 8.14 kills, 10.64 digs, 7.79 assists, and 3.57 aces per set. Cecil is led by 5'8 sophomore Emily Waldrige, who is second on the team in kills with 34. The 5'8 outside hitter has had 10 or more kills in Cecil's three games, averaging 11.33 kills a game. Another standout star for Cecil is Madeline Eckard. The 5'11 sophomore is versatile, playing outside hitter, middle blocker, and setter for the Seahawks. She leads the team in kills with 35, averaging 11.66 kills a game. Between Eckerd and Waldrige, they have combined for 60.5% of Cecil's kills this season.
Look for CSM captain Sam Rerig and Reagan Tuiasosopo to lead the charge for the Hawks, as both women played well and kept the Hawks in the game, as they contributed to a majority of the points scored against Montgomery. The first serve at Cecil begins at 6pm.
