Hawks Make it Through Rollercoaster of a Season
The College of Southern Maryland Hawks men's basketball team wrapped up their 2018-19 season on February 21 with a loss to the Northern Virginia Community College Nighthawks by a score of 85-78.
CSM's final record was 11-16 overall and 7-7 in the conference.
Head coach Alan Hoyt gave his team praise for their resilience all season long. "We were able to find success through injuries, academic issues, ineligibility, and even personal issues. They continued to work hard. We put ourselves in a lot of games only to come up short most of the time."
The Hawks showed their resilience by battling to the end in every game they played. Hoyt wants his team to remember "how close they were. We lost 10 games by seven points or less. That is only a couple possessions difference in each game. They need to be more focused in all areas and we will see the difference next year."
The Hawks had a tough start to the season when they lost six of their first seven games and five in a row, but turned things around when they rattled off a five-game winning streak in the middle of the season.
However, CSM ended the regular season on a five-game losing streak. Six of their seven losses in the last month and a half of the season were those decided by seven points or less.
Hoyt said he is most proud of his team for the effort they gave all season. "We were a young team and they never gave up. They continued to work hard to the very end. We are a better team now and I am excited to see their growth into next year."
CSM was one of the best offensive teams in MD JUCO this year. They ranked first in three-point percentage (38 percent), third in field goal percentage (46.7 percent), third in assists per game (17.4), and fifth in points per game (84.0).
Sophomore guard Jerome Savoy was named to the 2018-19 All-MD JUCO Men's Basketball Second Team and the 2018-19 NJCAA Region XX Division II Second Team. Sophomore guard Darnell Taylor was awarded a 2018-19 NJCAA Region XX Division II All Region Team Honorable Mention.
Savoy averaged 19.8 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game. His points per game average was third-best in MD JUCO and fifth-best in Region XX. Taylor's 41.8 three-point percentage ranked eighth among Region XX players and his assist-to-turnover ratio of 2.4 was tenth-best in Region XX.
